Congress Introduces Bill to Enhance Transit Workforce Development Amid Technological Changes
A new legislative proposal, the Transit Workforce Development Act, has been introduced by Congressman John Garamendi and Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson. The bill aims to amend federal transit law to allocate more funds from existing bus and bus facility grants towards workforce development. This includes training programs, registered apprenticeships, and labor-management partnerships. The initiative is a response to the growing workforce shortages in public transportation agencies, exacerbated by rapid technological advancements such as the transition to zero-emission buses. These changes demand new technical skills, including expertise in high-voltage systems and electronic diagnostics, which current training programs are insufficiently equipped to provide.
