President Trump's New Global Tariffs Affect 99.4% of U.S. Imports
The Trump administration has implemented a new set of global tariffs, replacing the previous 10% tariffs that expired. These new duties, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, apply to 60 of the U.S.'s top trading partners and cover 99.4% of U.S. imports. The tariffs are imposed under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, following an investigation into forced labor practices. The administration describes this as a significant international labor rights action. Exemptions are provided for goods in transit and those covered by other trade agreements, such as the USMCA. Notably, goods like oil, natural gas, and certain non-U.S. produced items are exempt to prevent economic disruption.
