Nonprofit News Outlets Experience Traffic Surge Amid Election Coverage
Several nonprofit news outlets have reported a significant increase in search traffic during the second quarter of 2026, attributed to their comprehensive coverage of primary elections. Outlets such as The 51st, CalMatters, The Colorado Sun, and NonDoc Media have seen notable spikes in site visits due to their voter guides and election-related content. The 51st, for instance, saw its traffic rise from 120,000 in May to 179,000 in June, largely due to its coverage of the Washington, D.C. primary election and the introduction of ranked-choice voting. Similarly, CalMatters experienced a surge in site visits, reaching 3.8 million in May, driven by its California gubernatorial primary coverage. These outlets have leveraged organic search and social media platforms to enhance their reach, with some also benefiting from Google Discover's algorithm changes.
