NASA Highlights Global Air Pollution Trends and Climate Impacts
According to NASA, air pollution is a significant global health issue, contributing to approximately 4 million premature deaths annually from outdoor exposure and an additional 3-4 million from indoor exposure. This equates to about 1 in 9 deaths worldwide. NASA's satellite data reveals complex changes in pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter, which are influenced by factors like fossil fuel usage, emission control measures, wildfire activity, and economic shifts. Additionally, human activities are driving increases in climate-altering gases like methane and carbon dioxide, which are profoundly affecting Earth's climate. NASA employs atmospheric models and ground-based observations to better understand these pollutants' impacts and to support policymakers in developing mitigation strategies.
