Governor Abbott Threatens Airport Funding Over Islamic Washing Facilities at IAH and DFW
Governor Greg Abbott has initiated a review of state grants for George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) due to concerns that Islamic washing facilities, known as ablution rooms, may violate state and federal nondiscrimination laws. Abbott argues that these facilities, designed for ritual washing before Muslim prayers, improperly favor one religion. He announced the review on August 14, stating his office would examine grants for potential revocation or denial of future funding. The governor also referred both airports to the U.S. Department of Transportation for investigation. DFW Airport has since halted plans for additional ablution stations, but IAH's existing facility, opened in February 2024, remains operational. Houston Airports stated the IAH facility was funded by international airline fees, not taxpayer money, and is open to all travelers regardless of faith.
