GAO Report Reveals Mismanagement and Safety Concerns at Camp East Montana Immigration Facility
A recent report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has uncovered significant issues at Camp East Montana, one of the largest immigration detention centers in the United States. Located on the grounds of Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, the facility has been criticized for wasting millions of dollars and endangering detainee health. The report highlights that the center, which can hold up to 5,000 immigrants, has been operating below capacity while billing for full capacity operations. Additionally, the report points to the destruction or loss of evidence in a detainee death investigation. The facility, initially operated by Acquisition Logistics LLC, has faced numerous violations, including inadequate medical and mental health care. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has since replaced the contractor with Amentum Services, promising improvements and increased oversight.
