Senator Baldwin Criticizes President Trump's Trade War as Canadian Tariffs Impact Wisconsin Dairy and Paper Industries
U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) has issued a statement on September 8th, criticizing President Trump's trade policies after Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on key Wisconsin exports, including dairy and paper products. These tariffs are a direct response to President Trump's earlier imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods and the abandonment of trade negotiations. Senator Baldwin highlighted that Wisconsin's dairy industry faces significant tariffs, with cheese varieties subject to a 25 percent tariff and milk powders, whey, and other dairy ingredients facing a 50 percent tariff. The state's paper industry, a national leader, is also affected, with corrugated boxes, coated papers, packaging, and tissue products facing mostly 50 percent retaliatory tariffs. Wisconsin's annual paper product sales to Canada exceed half a billion dollars, and Canada purchased nearly 28 percent of Wisconsin's total exports last year, amounting to over $7.5 billion.
