UK Expands Access to Overseas Entities Register, Easing Asset Tracing
The UK has implemented changes to the Register of Overseas Entities, effective June 2026, allowing broader access to trust information. This register, established by the Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act 2022, mandates that any overseas entity owning or intending to purchase land in the UK must register and disclose details of its beneficial owners, including any trusts involved. Previously, access to trust information was restricted, requiring applicants to provide the trust's name, a detail often unknown to outsiders. The new regulations remove this requirement, enabling applicants to request information using only the entity's name and registration number. This change is significant for solicitors and asset tracers, as it facilitates the identification of individuals behind offshore structures owning UK land.
