Nigerian Ports Blocked by Collision Between Maersk Feeder and Small Tanker, Causing Congestion
A collision involving a Maersk feeder containership, the Maersk Valparaiso, and a small tanker named Lady Martina has resulted in significant disruptions at Nigeria's Bonny Channel. The incident has left the Maersk vessel aground, blocking access to the channel and preventing ship movements at Port Harcourt and Onne Port. The Maersk Valparaiso, with a capacity of 1,740 TEU, was carrying approximately 717 containers bound for the West Africa Container Terminal at Onne. The collision occurred as the vessel was maneuvering to dock, leading to the grounding of the tanker and the Maersk ship becoming stuck in the mud. The Nigerian Maritime Administration has responded by sending a patrol boat, and five crew members from the tanker sustained injuries and were taken ashore for treatment. The authorities are also dealing with an oil spill resulting from the incident.
