NHTSA Escalates Investigation into Ford 1.0L EcoBoost Timing Belt Failures
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation has escalated its probe into the Ford 1.0L EcoBoost engine's timing belt issues from a preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis. This expanded investigation now covers 135,551 vehicles, including 2014-2017 Fiestas and 2015-2018 Focus models with the 1.0L engine and manual transmission, as well as 2018-2021 EcoSports and 2016-2018 Focus models with automatic transmissions. The core issue involves a 'wet belt' design, where the timing belt operates submerged in engine oil. NHTSA's findings indicate that the belt material degrades, shedding debris that clogs the oil pump pick-up screen, leading to a loss of oil pressure and potential engine failure. This problem often occurs around 70,000 miles, well before Ford's specified 150,000-mile replacement interval, and even in vehicles with documented routine oil service. The oil pump pick-up screen is not serviceable without removing the engine, making repairs costly...
