Romania Considers Canceling $400M Drone Deal with Elbit Systems
Romania is contemplating the cancellation of a $400 million contract with Elbit Systems for the purchase of Watchkeeper X tactical UAV systems. The decision comes after significant delivery delays, with the drones originally scheduled for delivery in summer 2025. Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruta has indicated that the ministry is exploring legal options to terminate the agreement due to concerns that the systems may become outdated. The delays have been attributed to the conflict in the Gaza Strip, with Elbit Systems requesting extensions under force majeure, two of which were approved. However, a third request was denied, leading to penalties totaling approximately 60 million euros. The contract involves critical components from France's Thales, which have yet to be delivered to Romania.
