Catholic Charities Hosts Event to Aid Homeless in Tampa, Reports Decrease in Homeless Population
Catholic Charities organized an event at its Tampa Hope site on 3rd Avenue, providing support to individuals experiencing homelessness. The event, held on a Saturday morning, included a pancake breakfast, haircuts, a raffle for toiletries and gift cards, and a clothing distribution. John "The Blanket Guy" Pessano contributed over a thousand clothing items. Residents like Odell Reyes, who spent three years on the streets, shared their positive experiences with the program, noting improvements in their mental and physical stability. The Tampa-Hillsborough Homeless Initiative reported a decrease in the homeless population in Tampa, from 2,040 in 2023 to 1,761 currently. Catholic Charities is also assisting residents with transitioning into full-time housing by subsidizing apartments.
