Ukraine Seeks U.S. Support for Elections Amid Peace Talks and Security Concerns
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Ukraine is prepared to hold elections within three months if Western allies, particularly the U.S., can guarantee security during wartime. This development comes as Ukraine is set to present revised peace proposals to U.S. negotiators, amidst ongoing discussions with about 30 coalition partners. The discussions include a 20-point framework document, security guarantees, and Ukraine's recovery plan. The backdrop of these talks is the reduced military aid from Europe, following the Trump administration's policy requiring other NATO countries to pay for supplies to Kyiv. Zelenskyy has expressed readiness for elections, contingent on security assurances and legislative changes to allow voting under martial law, which is currently in place due to the Russian invasion.
