Abdi Nur Salah, a former senior policy aide to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for wire fraud. Salah pleaded guilty to his involvement in the 'Feeding Our Future' fraud scheme, which siphoned over $1.6 million from a taxpayer-funded federal child nutrition program. The fraud occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, exploiting temporary changes to federal nutrition programs designed to facilitate meal provision to children during school closures. Salah acquired a nonprofit organization, Stigma-Free International, in October 2020, after the Minnesota Department of Education ceased approving new Federal Child Nutrition Program sites operated by for-profit businesses. He then transferred ownership to co-conspirators who used the nonprofit to establish meal sites and submit fraudulent claims for nearly five million meals.
