Berlin, Maryland Residents Prioritize Sidewalks and Infrastructure in Comprehensive Plan Draft
Residents of Berlin, Maryland, have overwhelmingly identified transportation, specifically more and better sidewalks, as their top priority in a community survey for the town's draft comprehensive plan. According to Project Manager Will White of Mead & Hunt, 96% of respondents expressed this need, a figure he noted as exceptionally high. The survey also highlighted desires to prioritize aging infrastructure (83%), housing renovation and reuse (82%), and preserving neighborhood character (74%). These findings were presented during a two-hour meeting of the Berlin Planning Commission, where consultants from Mead & Hunt introduced the initial iteration of the town's vision for growth, investment, and preservation. While the discussion covered various topics, a significant portion focused on a recommendation to transition to a hybrid form-based zoning code, which regulates the physical appearance of buildings and their relationship to surroundings rather than solely their usage.
