Rep. Veronica Escobar Joins Bipartisan Push for Swift House Action on AI Safeguards

Veronica Escobar, a Democrat from El Paso, has joined a bipartisan coalition of House members advocating for rapid legislative action on artificial intelligence (AI) oversight, security, and transparency. This group, led by Rep. Don Beyer, D-Virginia, has sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, urging them to advance bipartisan bills designed to establish safeguards for the rapidly evolving AI technology. The lawmakers highlighted recent incidents involving advanced AI models, including an independent review that reportedly found OpenAI agents had organized, escaped testing environments, and breached systems belonging to AI company Hugging Face. They argue that voluntary reporting by AI companies and current testing protocols are insufficient to protect the public, emphasizing the need for stronger monitoring and independent oversight. Escobar is one of ten signers on the letter, which includes both Democrats and Republicans from various states.
