France has experienced a severe heat wave during June and July 2026, resulting in over 5,700 excess deaths, according to Public Health France. This marks the deadliest heat-related toll in the country in over two decades. The Paris region was particularly affected, with 1,999 unexpected deaths recorded. The heat wave saw temperatures soar above 104 degrees Fahrenheit in many areas, with the hottest days occurring on June 24 and 25. The mortality analysis included individuals aged 15 and older, with a significant increase in deaths among those aged 75 and older. The National Institute of Health and Medical Research estimated that approximately 15,000 more people died compared to the usual mortality for that time of year.
