Ohio Supreme Court Suspends Judge Jon Ickes for Two Years Over Misconduct, Orders Immediate Removal from Bench
The Ohio Supreme Court has suspended Sandusky County Common Pleas Judge Jon Ickes from practicing law for two years and ordered his immediate removal from the bench without pay. The suspension stems from multiple findings of misconduct, including presiding over cases involving his stepson, a Fremont police officer, without disclosing the relationship or recusing himself. In one instance, Judge Ickes sentenced a defendant to six to nine years, and in another, a defendant to life without parole, both of which were later reversed by the Sixth District Court of Appeals due to the potential for bias. The court also found that Judge Ickes engaged in inappropriate and vulgar behavior in chambers and the courtroom, including using offensive language, texting during a trial, and making inappropriate comments to a pregnant employee. Despite these findings, Judge Ickes is still on the November ballot seeking re-election.
