Italian Navy Intercepts Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker Amid EU Sanctions
The Italian Navy, as part of the European Union's Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, boarded the tanker Toa Payoh in the central Mediterranean on August 2, 2026. The vessel, part of Russia's 'shadow fleet', was intercepted west of the Sicilian island of Pantelleria while en route from Benin to Istanbul. The tanker, which had recently switched to a Cameroon registry, is subject to EU sanctions. This operation is part of Europe's increased scrutiny of vessels suspected of aiding Moscow in circumventing oil sanctions. The Italian Ministry of Defence reported that the boarding was conducted by the flagship ITS Thaon di Revel, with support from the Hellenic Navy and a Polish maritime patrol aircraft.
