Astronomers Found the First Atmosphere on a Planet in Another Star's Habitable Zone
Astronomers have discovered an atmosphere on the exoplanet LHS 1140b, located in the habitable zone of its host star, approximately 48 light-years from Earth. This Earth-like rocky planet resides in the 'Goldilocks' zone, where conditions may allow for liquid water. The atmosphere, primarily composed of helium, marks the first time an atmosphere has been detected on a rocky planet in a habitable zone. This discovery provides renewed hope in the search for life beyond Earth, as it suggests that rocky planets can retain atmospheres despite harsh conditions.
