Intensifying El Nino to Drive Extreme Global Weather, Warns UN
A rapidly intensifying El Nino event is expected to dominate global weather patterns in the coming months, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This periodic climate phenomenon is projected to exacerbate extreme weather events, including heatwaves, droughts, and flooding worldwide. Central Pacific sea-surface temperatures are forecasted to rise by more than 2.9°C (5.22°F) above normal, disrupting weather systems and driving global temperature spikes. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, stating that El Nino is 'adding fuel to a planet already on fire.' The WMO predicts above-normal temperatures across most land areas, with the most intense heat expected in Africa, southern Europe, the Indian subcontinent, East Asia, and South America. Scientists warn that this El Nino could reach record intensity later this year, though uncertainties remain in model projections. (Source time: Fri, 31 Jul 2026 20:38:56 GMT)
