Oak Park Village Board Rejects Advisory Referendum on Zoning Changes
The Oak Park Village Board has decided not to include an advisory referendum on the November 3 election ballot regarding potential zoning changes. The board voted 5-1 against the referendum, which would have allowed residents to express their views on a proposal to alter the village's zoning code. This proposal, developed by Opticos Design, aims to increase 'missing middle housing' such as duplexes and townhomes to improve affordability and inclusivity. Trustee James Taglia, the sole supporter of the referendum, argued that residents should have a say in such significant changes. However, Trustee Cory Wesley opposed the referendum, citing a history of advisory referendums not influencing board decisions. The zoning changes have been under discussion for two years, with mixed community reactions regarding their potential impact.
