Florida Attorney General Launches Criminal Investigation into Sloth Deaths at Planned Tourist Attraction
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced his office's involvement in a criminal investigation concerning the deaths of dozens of sloths at Sloth World Orlando, a tourist attraction that was under construction. The investigation follows public pressure and demands from lawmakers, including state Representative Anna Eskamani, who criticized the situation as a 'failure of government.' The sloths, imported from South America, died due to conditions such as cold exposure and stress during transport. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) initially found no grounds for criminal charges, but the Attorney General's office, alongside the Ninth Circuit State Attorney’s Office, is now reviewing the case. The company behind Sloth World Orlando has filed for bankruptcy, and the surviving sloths have been transferred to the Central Florida Zoo.
