Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Southern California: Record Temperatures Expected
Southern California is bracing for an extreme heat event starting Friday, July 31, and lasting through Sunday, August 2, 2026. The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for much of the region, excluding coastal areas. High pressure over Arizona is expected to expand westward, driving temperatures approximately 10°F (5.5°C) above normal. Forecasts predict highs ranging from 95°F to 115°F (35°C to 46°C) in valleys and deserts, with some areas potentially nearing 120°F (49°C). Overnight temperatures will remain elevated, increasing the risk of heat stress. Additionally, humidity levels may rise later in the week, exacerbating discomfort. The heat wave is also expected to heighten wildfire risks, particularly in foothills and lower mountain areas.
