Ex-Vietnam POW Everett Alvarez Reflects on American Dream and Sacrifice
Everett Alvarez, a retired U.S. Navy commander and former prisoner of war (POW) during the Vietnam War, shared his reflections on the American Dream and the sacrifices made to preserve it. Alvarez, who was the first American pilot shot down over North Vietnam in 1964, spent over eight years as a POW in the infamous 'Hanoi Hilton.' He recounted his experiences of being treated as a criminal rather than a POW by the North Vietnamese and the harsh conditions he and his fellow captives endured. Despite these challenges, Alvarez emphasized the importance of faith and camaraderie among the prisoners, which helped them survive. He also highlighted his personal journey from a humble background in Salinas, California, to serving in the Navy, underscoring the opportunities available in the United States.
