Ontario's Financial Accountability Office Reports Funding Shortfalls for Healthcare and Education Sectors
Ontario's Financial Accountability Office (FAO) has released reports indicating that the province's healthcare, university, and college sectors will require increased spending to maintain current service levels. The FAO's independent review of the government's 2026 budget projects significant funding shortfalls for both ministries starting in 2027-28. The province had projected healthcare spending to grow at an average annual rate of 3.2 percent, but the FAO's report suggests a 4.4 percent average annual growth is needed over the next three years to sustain current services. Similarly, while the budget predicted a 2.2 percent average annual decrease in spending for the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, the FAO estimates a 3.2 percent average annual growth is necessary to maintain service levels. These figures highlight a substantial gap between planned spending and the funding required to prevent a decline in service quality and accessibility.
