Israeli Study Suggests Viagra May Inhibit Cancer Spread Through Cholesterol Pathway
A recent study conducted by researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel has revealed a potential new use for sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, beyond its well-known application for erectile dysfunction. The study, published in the journal Cancer Research, suggests that sildenafil may impede the metastasis of cancer cells by altering cholesterol transport within cells. This discovery highlights a previously unknown biological mechanism that could limit cancer cells' ability to spread. The research team, led by Prof. Ayelet Erez and Dr. Yarden Ariav, found that sildenafil reduces the availability of cholesterol inside cells, which is crucial for cancer cells to detach from primary tumors and establish themselves in new tissues. The study also explored the potential synergistic effect of combining sildenafil with statins, drugs that lower cholesterol production, which may further hinder cancer cell metastasis.
