ArXiv Implements Stricter Penalties for AI-Generated Papers to Combat Misinformation
ArXiv, a prominent open archive for scientific research, is taking significant steps to address the growing issue of low-quality papers generated by artificial intelligence. The platform has introduced stricter penalties for authors whose submissions contain AI-generated errors, such as non-existent sources or traces of chatbot correspondence. According to Thomas Dietterich, chair of the ArXiv computer science section, authors found guilty of these infractions will face a one-year ban from the platform. Furthermore, even after the ban is lifted, future submissions from these authors will only be accepted if they have been peer-reviewed and published in reputable scientific journals. This initiative is not intended to ban the use of AI in research but to ensure that scientists are fully accountable for the content of their papers. Each case will be reviewed individually by platform moderators, with final decisions made by section chairs. Authors will have the right to appeal these decisions.
