AMA Introduces Framework to Combat AI Deepfake Physician Impersonation
The American Medical Association (AMA) has unveiled a comprehensive policy framework aimed at protecting physicians from unauthorized AI-generated deepfakes. This initiative, developed by the AMA's Center for Digital Health and AI, seeks to modernize identity protections for physicians and address legal gaps. The framework is built on seven policy principles, including the protection of physician identity as a right, prohibition of deceptive impersonation, and mandatory transparency. AMA CEO John Whyte, M.D., emphasized the public health and safety risks posed by deepfakes, which can undermine patient trust and lead to harmful, unproven care. The AMA is calling for strong action from federal and state lawmakers to safeguard professional integrity in the digital age.
