Infrared Saunas Offer Cardiovascular and Recovery Benefits, Lack Detoxification Proof
Infrared saunas, operating at lower temperatures (120–140°F) compared to traditional Finnish saunas (150–195°F), directly warm the body using infrared light, leading to substantial heat exposure and sweating. While traditional saunas have a more extensive research base, infrared saunas show promise for cardiovascular support, relaxation, and post-exercise recovery. However, claims regarding detoxification, arthritis cure, or dementia prevention are not strongly supported by current scientific evidence. The most compelling health data, such as reduced risks of dementia, hypertension, and stroke, primarily stems from long-term studies on Finnish saunas, like the KIHD study. Infrared-specific evidence is more limited, with notable findings from Waon therapy, a specific far-infrared protocol used in Japan for heart failure and peripheral arterial disease patients. This therapy has demonstrated improvements in heart function and blood flow under controlled clinical settings.
