NJ Democrat Adam Hamawy's Past Volunteer Work in Gaza Hospital Raises Questions Amid Congressional Campaign
Adam Hamawy, the Democratic nominee for New Jersey's 12th Congressional District, is facing scrutiny over his past volunteer work at a hospital in Gaza. In May 2024, Hamawy, an Egyptian-born former combat surgeon, volunteered at Gaza's European Hospital, which he described as a benign civilian facility. However, Israeli forces later discovered a tunnel system at the hospital linked to Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar. Despite accusations, Hamawy has consistently denied any knowledge of Hamas activities during his time there. His campaign has been further complicated by past associations with controversial figures and organizations, including a brief stint with a nonprofit later linked to al-Qaeda and a connection to Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, a convicted terrorist leader.
