Ohio Residents Face Record-High Electric Bills Amid Rising Costs and Demand
Electric bills in Ohio are expected to reach unprecedented levels this month, with residents in cities like Columbus, Cleveland, and Dayton experiencing significant increases. According to the Ohio Utility Rate Survey, the average electric bill for a residential customer using 900 kilowatt-hours has surged, with Columbus residents facing nearly $200 bills. This increase is attributed to a combination of factors, including a heat dome over the Midwest, increased demand from data centers, and the closure of coal-fired power plants. Additionally, grid operators have been slow to integrate new power producers, exacerbating the situation. The Citizens Utility Board and other experts highlight that generation costs are the primary driver of these increases, while transmission and distribution costs have risen modestly.
