USDA Declares 15 Counties Disaster Areas Due to Drought
The USDA has designated 15 counties across Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia as natural disaster areas due to severe drought conditions. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, these areas experienced either D2 (Severe Drought) for eight or more consecutive weeks or D3-D4 (Extreme to Exceptional Drought) during the growing season. This designation allows affected farmers to access emergency loans to recover from losses, replace essential items, and reorganize their operations. The application deadline for these loans is May 10, 2027. Contiguous counties in these states are also eligible for assistance.
