Idaho Schools Face Varied Start Dates Amid Legislative Proposal Rejection

In Idaho, the back-to-school season is underway with significant variation in start dates across the state's 198 school districts and charter schools. The first day of school spans a 33-day period, with some schools like Sage International in Boise and Middleton already in session as of August 7. The largest districts, Boise and West Ada, are set to begin on August 12. The latest start date is September 9 at Hollister Charter School. Earlier this year, a legislative proposal aimed to standardize the start date to the Tuesday after Labor Day, which would have been September 8 this year. The bill, sponsored by Rep. John Vander Woude, a Republican from Nampa, was intended to benefit the tourist industry by retaining employees through Labor Day. However, the House Education Committee ultimately rejected the proposal.
