Treasury Secretary Bessent Announces 'Operation Economic Outcast' with Broadened Sanctions Against Iran
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced expansive new sanctions against Iran and its supporters as the conflict approaches its six-month mark. This initiative, named 'Operation Economic Outcast,' introduces five new categories for secondary sanctions: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) also sanctioned nearly 60 individuals and entities accused of supporting Iran. Secretary Bessent stated the goal is to 'sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,' warning that those who align with Tehran should expect isolation. The announcement did not specify when countries must comply to avoid sanctions, but Bessent indicated that non-compliance would lead to swift ramifications. The latest sanctions are part of an 'economic onslaught' aimed at pressuring Iran, though Bessent clarified they would not be imposed immediately.
