Amtrak Breaks Ground on $1 Billion Sunnyside Yard Maintenance Facility in New York City
Amtrak has commenced major construction on a new maintenance facility at Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City, Queens. This project, representing an investment of over $1 billion primarily funded by Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) grants, is designed to support Amtrak’s incoming Airo trainsets and enhance the efficiency of daily inspections, cleaning, and turnarounds for trains operating on the Northeast Corridor and connecting routes. The facility will open in phases through 2030 and includes a new two-track maintenance and inspection building, six new service and cleaning tracks, and the consolidation of various operational functions into a single location. Additionally, 11 existing service platforms will be upgraded to ensure trains can be properly cleaned, prepared, and stored. This initiative is part of Amtrak’s broader fleet modernization program, which involves more than 20 maintenance facility and rail yard upgrades across its network.
