Massachusetts Insurance Brokers Sentenced for Defrauding Clients
A married couple from New Bedford, Massachusetts, Brendan and Lisa Lawler, have been sentenced for orchestrating a fraud scheme through their business, BL Insurance Brokerage, LLC. The couple was sentenced to eight months in prison followed by three years of supervised release by a federal district court judge in Boston. They were also ordered to pay restitution, the amount of which will be determined later. The Lawlers defrauded at least 50 individuals and insurance providers by collecting insurance payments that were supposed to be forwarded to insurance companies. Instead, they used the funds for personal purposes. The scheme, which ran from March 2023 to March 2024, involved creating false certificates of insurance and providing clients with fake documentation to conceal the fraud. The couple pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in March, following charges filed in August 2025.
