NASA's Psyche Mission Utilizes Mars Flyby for Asteroid Exploration
NASA's Psyche spacecraft recently completed a flyby of Mars, capturing stunning images and gaining a significant speed boost by using the planet as a gravitational slingshot. The spacecraft is en route to the asteroid Psyche, believed to be the iron core of a planetesimal, located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Scheduled to arrive in August 2029, the mission aims to study the asteroid's surface chemical composition, magnetic field, gravitational field, and inner composition. The flyby allowed the spacecraft to calibrate its sensors and gain a 1,000 mile-per-hour speed increase, setting it on the correct trajectory for its ultimate destination.
