Swimming Advisory Issued in Oak Island Due to Floodwater Pumping
State environmental officials in Oak Island, North Carolina, have issued a swimming advisory following the town's decision to pump standing floodwaters into the Atlantic Ocean. Heavy rains recently caused widespread flooding in streets, yards, and homes, prompting the town to take action to minimize property damage and ensure emergency vehicle access. The North Carolina Recreational Water Quality Program warns that floodwaters may contain hazardous pollutants, including waste from septic systems, oil, gasoline, and runoff from wildlife. While the advisory does not confirm the presence of disease-causing organisms, it highlights an increased risk of contamination that could lead to illness. Warning signs have been placed at the Crowell Street discharge site and will remain until 24 hours after pumping operations cease.
