Former U.S. Ambassador Suggests Kabul Embassy Reopening Contingent on Taliban Policy Changes
Former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, Ronald Neumann, has indicated that the reopening of the U.S. embassy in Kabul is a possibility, but it is entirely dependent on the Taliban making significant policy changes. Neumann, who served as ambassador from 2005 to 2007, stated in an interview with i24NEWS that while there are pragmatic reasons for continued engagement with the Taliban, their current policies, particularly concerning women and girls, pose a major obstacle. The United States closed its embassy in Kabul in August 2021 following the withdrawal of U.S. forces and the collapse of the former Afghan government, and has not formally recognized the Taliban government. Neumann highlighted that the Taliban's approach has not moderated since regaining power, with further restrictions imposed on women. He emphasized that any move to reopen the embassy without substantial policy shifts from the Taliban would likely face strong political opposition within the United States.
