Alaska Faces Record Cold Winter, Anticipates El Niño Warmup
Alaska has experienced its coldest December-through-March period in half a century, with Fairbanks recording its coldest winter on record. Juneau saw its coldest December and snowiest winter, while Anchorage experienced its coldest March ever. National Weather Service climate researcher Brian Brettschneider has indicated that an El Niño climate pattern is expected to bring significant warming to the region. This shift is anticipated to occur by the end of the year, with forecasts suggesting a strong or very strong El Niño. Historically, El Niño conditions lead to warmer temperatures and reduced snowfall across most of Alaska.
