College Student Dies After Contracting Meningococcal Disease Following Portugal Trip
Alexander 'Zander' Philogene, a 21-year-old Australian university student, died after contracting meningococcal disease following a trip to Portugal. Philogene, who was studying finance and chemical engineering, began experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, and shortness of breath while returning to Austria from Porto, Portugal. Despite being vaccinated, it is suspected that he contracted a newer, aggressive strain of the disease recently discovered in the U.K. Philogene suffered a cardiac arrest at an airport in Austria and was airlifted to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His sudden death has left his family and friends devastated, and a GoFundMe has been set up to support his funeral costs.
