OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Apologizes for Failing to Report Shooter's ChatGPT Conversations
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has issued a formal apology to the community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, following a mass shooting incident in February. The apology comes after it was revealed that OpenAI did not alert authorities about disturbing conversations the shooter had with its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, despite internal staff flagging the account. The shooter, an 18-year-old, killed eight people, including six children, at a local school. Altman's letter, dated April 23, expressed deep regret for not notifying law enforcement and acknowledged the irreversible harm caused to the community. The letter was shared publicly by David Eby, the premier of British Columbia, who emphasized the necessity of the apology but also its insufficiency given the tragedy's impact.
