Record-Low Danube Levels Disrupt Ukrainian Grain Exports, Impacting Global Markets
The Danube River, a crucial route for Ukrainian grain exports, is experiencing record-low water levels due to heat waves and lack of rain. This has forced vessels to carry lighter loads, increasing costs and delays for grain transportation. The situation is exacerbated by ongoing Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports, which have already reduced Ukraine's Black Sea export capacity by a third. Romania's Constanta port, a key alternative exit point for Ukrainian grain, is also affected, leading to increased competition for transportation resources. The disruptions are occurring amidst an unusually strong El Niño and rising energy costs, further straining global agricultural markets.
