Japan and South Korea Advance Autonomous Navigation Systems for Commercial Ships

Japan and South Korea are making significant progress in developing autonomous navigation systems for large commercial ships. The Nippon Foundation in Japan has been sponsoring demonstration projects to enhance safety and reduce the workload for seafarers, addressing challenges such as an aging workforce and declining numbers of seafarers. The MEGURI2040 Full Autonomous Ship Program recently achieved a milestone with ClassNK granting a full autonomous notation to the domestic containership Genbu, marking the first case of such notation for medium- to long-range coastal routes. South Korea's Avikus, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai, has been working with Norway's DNV to establish safety requirements and verification frameworks for its autonomous navigation support system, HiNAS Control, which recently received Type Approval.

The project involved partnerships with Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, WinGD, and Lloyd's Register, and included extensive testing of the propulsion systems.

The U.S. Defense Department's POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) and South Korea's Ministry of National Defense Agency for KIA Recovery and Identification are leading the initiative. The collaboration aims to gather research, engage with local residents, and utilize medical decompression chamber centers for underwater exploration. This effort is part of a broader agreement signed in 2025 to enhance cooperation in identifying and recovering remains of military personnel missing in action during the Korean War.
