Central Time Zone Unifies Texas Operations Despite Geographic Sprawl
Most of Texas operates on Central Time, a unifying rhythm that synchronizes business, transportation, and daily life across two-thirds of the state. This includes major cities like Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin, which adhere to Central Standard Time (CST) and Central Daylight Time (CDT) during warmer months. While parts of far West Texas, such as El Paso and Hudspeth counties, observe Mountain Time, the overwhelming majority of the state's population and economic activity are aligned with the Central Time Zone. This alignment is codified under U.S. federal law and reinforced by state practices, with the Department of Transportation overseeing time zone boundaries. Technology, including Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers, GPS signals, and cellular networks, continuously adjusts computer systems and devices to maintain precise Central Time across the state.
