Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Set to Open in December, Expanding Global Network
The Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi has announced that the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open to the public on December 11, 2026. This new museum, designed by the late architect Frank Gehry, will be located on Saadiyat Island and will become the fourth institution in the Guggenheim's global network, joining existing locations in New York, Venice, and Bilbao. The project was initially announced in 2006, with construction beginning in 2011. However, the project faced delays due to economic challenges and contract changes, resuming in 2019. The museum features a unique design with ten sculptural cones, nine of which are clad in stainless steel mesh, and one in onyx and glass, creating an irregular skyline. The museum will house 30 galleries, a center for art and technology, children's facilities, archives, a library, and a conservation laboratory, covering a total built area of 80,000 square meters.
