Palo Alto Parents Sue School District Over Mosque Field Trip, Citing First Amendment Violations
A group of Jewish, Hindu, and Zoroastrian parents and students in Palo Alto, California, have filed a lawsuit against the Palo Alto Unified School District. The lawsuit alleges that a high school program's field trips to a mosque, without visits to other houses of worship, violated the First Amendment. The complaint, filed on August 7 in the Northern District of California, claims the district failed to maintain religious neutrality, ensure equal treatment among faiths, protect student privacy, and properly vet speakers. The field trips were part of Palo Alto High's Social Justice Pathway, a program that examines English and history through a social justice lens. During the mosque visits in 2022 and 2025, female students were encouraged to wear head coverings, observed midday prayers, interacted with a Quran memorization program, received Qurans, and were taught that Islam promotes social justice.
