Exercise-Released Molecule L-BAIBA Shows Promise in Protecting Muscles Weakened by Type 2 Diabetes
Scientists have identified a molecule, L-β-aminoisobutyric acid (L-BAIBA), released during exercise, that strengthens muscles and improves exercise performance. This molecule is crucial for muscle adaptation to physical activity, protecting against damage and weakness. The research, published in Nature Communications, highlights L-BAIBA as a central regulator of muscle remodeling, strengthening, and endurance in response to exercise training. Professor Lee Roberts at the University of Leeds, who led the research, previously studied L-BAIBA in 2014, finding it had beneficial effects on metabolism by boosting fat-burning. The current study further reveals its role in triggering muscles to respond and change, linking exercise to positive alterations in muscle structure and metabolism. This discovery suggests L-BAIBA could be a potential therapeutic treatment for muscle damage associated with chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes.
