West Hartford Bills Law Firm for Unauthorized Graffiti Cleanup
A prominent Connecticut law firm, Trantolo & Trantolo, has been billed $742.16 by the town of West Hartford for the cleanup of unauthorized graffiti. The firm, specializing in personal injury, had initiated a safety campaign involving stenciled messages on public sidewalks in Hartford and West Hartford. These messages, created with washable chalk, included safety reminders and statistics about accidents, alongside the firm's name and 'personal injury lawyers' in smaller print. While the firm maintained the campaign was for public safety and used temporary materials with a cleanup plan, city and town leaders viewed the messages as unauthorized commercial advertising and graffiti. Hartford issued a $90 fine and filed a complaint with the Statewide Grievance Committee for alleged ethics violations, citing potential pedestrian distraction. West Hartford, however, opted to only seek reimbursement for cleanup costs, which included labor for two employees, power washer use, and a truck.
